How does Connection work in marketing and in life and why is it important?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Lynn Serafinn&lt;/b&gt;: There are many levels of Connection. In the book I discuss Connection at 7 different levels: Connection with Self, Source, others, our businesses, our audience, money and marketing. Whether or not we are connected with Self—our true Selves—has a radical impact upon how we conduct our business practice and our marketing. When we are disconnected from Self, business and money both become representations of who we believe ourselves to be, rather than who we actually are. When we see our business through that kind of vision, not only will it never project any kind of authenticity, but it will also never create true Connection with our audience. When we are disconnected from both Self and Source, we will have no qualms about exploiting and abusing our natural world, because we will do anything we deem necessary to feed our need to make our business succeed financially, which is the only way our fragile self-image can be fed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also, when we are disconnected from the essence of our business, it will never fulfil us, nor will it ever provide a true service to the rest of humanity. The ultimate purpose of business is to "feed" society, whether in actual food, goods or valuable services.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If our relationship with our businesses is one of Disconnection (the first of the "Deadly Sins" in the book), we will also have a "disconnect" with our audience. And when we are disconnected from our audience, we will see them as a prize to be won, rather than as fellow human beings. All of these disconnected relationships influence how we run our businesses and conduct our marketing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But when we are truly connected with Self, Source, others, our business and our audience, not only is the work we do congruent with who we are, and with the world in which we live, but our marketing also becomes a way of communicating that serves humanity rather than exploits it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Gregory "Coach" Fernander: Another of your 7 Graces is "Transparency". What is Transparency, and how can we implement it in marketing?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Lynn Serafinn&lt;/b&gt;: Many people think that the word "transparent" means to be open and honest. And while this is part of the meaning, the literal meaning of the word "Transparency" is "to shine light through." The "light" we shine is the Essence of who we truly are.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When we are Transparent in our businesses, it is a given that we are being open and honest. But Transparency goes beyond this. It means that we are allowing our Essence to be seen and heard through our businesses. In other words, our businesses become both the conduit and the symbol for our core values.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When we market from a place of Transparency, we are not only communicating in an open and honest way, but we are also allowing the Essence of the business, product or service to shine through in an open and honest way. This doesn't mean that we "gloss" our marketing up to make it pretty or to win public favour. Rather, it means our primary aim of our marketing to be a clear expression of the fundamental values of our business, and that the primary aim of our business is to be a clear expression of our own fundamental values.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Gregory "Coach" Fernander: The last of your 7 Graces is Collaboration. Why is it important to start the shift away from Competition and towards Collaboration in our businesses and our lives?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Lynn Serafinn&lt;/b&gt;: I am asked this question so frequently, Gregory. So many of us have been raised to believe that Competition is essential to business growth, and also that it is part of the natural course of "evolution" in both business and in life. However, if you study the natural world, Life is actually a massive, interconnected Collaboration. The natural world is an eco-system or a permaculture; all aspects of human life are part of that eco-system—including our economic system. The balance of the greater eco-system of the world is dependent upon all components working together in harmony, rather than competing for space. I give many examples in my book about how Collaboration works in nature, rather than Competition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the book, I also cite many studies that prove Competition does not necessarily produce a higher-calibre performance in human beings. These studies show that it can limit innovation and prevent people from taking creative risks, resulting in LESS growth overall. This is true in so many scenarios, from business, to artists, to schoolchildren.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Collaboration is the natural way of life. It brings us safety, innovation and always results in more than the sum of its parts. Besides, when you get right down to it, with the rise of the Internet and social media, we have no choice but to rethink our notions of "possession" and ownership, especially in the realm of "intellectual property".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Change is already upon us. Those who adopt and create Collaborative solutions in business and marketing will prosper. An improvement in the overall health and fitness of a society will ultimately lead to a more productive society.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The question that we would like to ask is, “Who is responsible for the condition of a society’s most precious resource?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From the perspective of the socio-economic aspects of any society, and from the standpoint that each employee is a resource that adds true value to the society as a whole; it has become clear that employers accepting responsibility for maintaining the optimal condition of its resources will become more profitable. In other words, if the goods and services that employers produce are the assets that are measured to determine an economy’s well-being, then the very same employers are essentially responsible for the well-being of that economy.
